American Sign Language 1

This learner-centered course is designed for students with little or no previous knowledge of ASL. The course is the first in a series of courses designed to develop the skills and knowledge needed to communicate in American Sign Language. This course introduces the basics of American Sign Language (ASL) and is designed for students who have little or no previous knowledge of ASL. Emphasis is placed on the development of basic expressive and receptive skills. ASL questions, commands, and other simple sentence structures are introduced to develop rudimentary conversational skills in ASL.   Class topics will include basic grammar, vocabulary, fingerspelling, numbers, and cultural information related to the Deaf Community

 

Please note: This is a HIGH SCHOOL level class, for high school credit. (ASL 2 will be offered next year)

Class time: 3:00pm - 3:55pm - Tuesday

Recommended Age/Grade: 8th grade and above recommended

This course is self paced. Since we meet only one day a week, much of the learning will be done by the student at home, coming together in the classroom to share what we have learned and communicate with each other.
